[CAS01] Evaluation of Models Represented by Charts of Concepts. Evaluation of the ER Model with the UML

Rapport Scientifique : Date de dépot: 2001/01/01, (Tech. Rep.: CEDRIC-01-200)
motcle:
Résumé: It is difficult for software analysts and designers to select models because they are defined through texts and ER and OO metamodels which are not easy to evaluate and to compare. We propose to evaluate models by measuring their sizes, their complexities resulting from relationships existing between their concepts, the numbers of their circuits between definitions of concepts, and the numbers of independent sets of concepts. To do that, we use classical metrics to measure directed graphs. These metrics can be used because we represent models with charts of concepts. A chart is a directed graphs whose nodes represent concepts of a model, and arcs illustrate dependencies between definitions of its concepts. We evaluate the ER model and the Unified Modeling Language (UML), and we compare them.
