Résumé: Since a few years, smart sensors and Internet of Things become indispensable technologies for industrial and residence use. Emerging standards start to support IoT applications. However, multihop routing is always a technical challenge. The IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low power and lossy networks (RPL) is appearing as an emerging IETF standard especially tailored for Low Power Area Networks (6LoWPAN). RPL constructs a Direct Acyclic Graph (DAG) according to an objective function that governs the routing according to some metric(s) and constraint(s). Several metrics have been proposed to take into account various parameters in the routing such as the expected transmission count, the residual energy, the energy consumption, the traffic or the link quality. But, to the best of our knowledge this paper is the first comparative evaluation of energy-aware routing metrics for RPL. In this paper, we show the performance of energy-aware routing metrics in terms of the packet delivery ratio, the end-to-end delay, the energy consumption and control messages. We consider two topologies: random and grid topology, and three communication scenarii for the exchange of messages: no packet loss, 20% and 40% packet loss. Our experiments with five metrics show that multi-criteria metrics outperform other metrics.
