[CHP00] A synthesis on the Definitions and Notations of Cardinalities of Relationships

This paper presents a synthesis of definitions concerning the cardinalities of relationships of entity-relationship models: the Tardieu et al. model used in particular by the Merise method, the Chen model used in particular by the OMT method, and the Teorey model used in particular by the Fusion method and by the Unified Modeling Language (UML). It specifies why definitions of the cardinalities of relationships of these models are different. It shows with an example that the cardinalities of n-ary (n * 3) relationships defined with the Chen model are ambiguous. It presents solutions that allow the removing of this ambiguity.
