IFIP Working Group 8.8 Smart Cards
The International
Federation For Information Processing Working Group
8.8 was established by IFIP in 1998 as a working group of
Technical Committee TC 8.
WG 8.8 is concerned with “the use of smart cards in information
systems”. The Working group organises meetings and conferences,
it publishes special issues of journals, and it maintains a web site
and a mailing list.
Aims and Scope of IFIP WG 8.8
Aims
Smart cards are to be understood as personal, portable, flexible,
secure
tokens that form an integral part of a larger information
infrastructure.
The aims are:
- Encourage interaction between the numerous actors in the smart
card
area
to create a common and coherent approach of a specific methodology.
- Address the background technologies of component architectures;
for
example dedicated chips, security devices, memory management.
- Specify and design smart card operating systems.
- Identify and develop relationship between different themes of
information systems and smart cards, for example promote the theme of
smart cards as a widely distributed data base.
- Identify interfaces between smart cards as an active components
of
distributed systems and networks.
- Promote a global security analysis of information systems using
smart
cards.
- Investigate the field of applications of smart cards and propose
a scheme
for a design methodology.
- Create new models for information systems which use smart cards.
- Participate to advanced standardization discussions and
propositions.
Scope
The study of smart cards as an innovative component of widely
distributed
systems. The scope includes all the aspects of smart cards design and
applications:
- Technology with hardware, software and security specific
requirements.
- Application design with a special emphasis on development
methodology
of distributed systems.
- Service providing including analysis of transactions, protocols
and
more generally speaking, the process of a top down design of smart
cards projects.
- The interaction of smart card related technology with society,
economics,
public services and organisations.
Activities WG 8.8
- The officers of WG 8.8 form the steering committee of CARDIS, the main
scientific smart card conference.
- WG 8.8 stimulates and facilitates its members to write technical
monographs.
- WG 8.8 fosters liaison between industry and academia through
adequate
representation from both areas in its membership.
How to become involved in WG 8.8
You can become involved in the working group as a friend
or a member.
You can become a friend of the group by attending one of our working
conferences or business meetings. Working conferences are held
every 2 years. Business meetings are typically held
in conjunction with the CARDIS conference or the USENIX conference
on smart cards. Typically, a friend who has participated in two out
of three consecutive meetings is considered eligible for election as a
member. By this election process, the members of the group nominate new
members.
